Early Years Foundation Stage

At Bacton Primary School, we believe the Early Years Foundation Stage provides the foundations for future learning, development and wellbeing. We are committed to ensuring every child feels happy, safe and valued as they begin their school journey.

We recognise that every child is unique and arrives with different experiences, strengths and interests. Through strong relationships, high expectations and a nurturing environment, we help children develop confidence, independence and a love of learning.

Our curriculum is designed to develop the whole child. We place particular importance on communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, early reading, number sense and physical development. Through carefully planned learning opportunities, children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive both in school and beyond.

Play, Learn and Explore

Children learn best through a balance of:

  • High-quality adult-led teaching.
  • Purposeful play.
  • Exploration and discovery.
  • Practical, hands-on experiences.
  • Rich opportunities for communication and language development.
  • Carefully planned continuous provision both indoors and outdoors.

We encourage children to ask questions, solve problems, work collaboratively and become increasingly independent learners.

Communication and Language

Strong communication skills underpin all learning. We place a high priority on developing children's vocabulary, listening skills and confidence in speaking. Through storytelling, conversation, role play, singing, discussion and high-quality interactions, children learn to express themselves clearly and confidently.

Reading and Early Mathematics

We are passionate about developing a love of reading from the very start of school. Children are immersed in stories, rhymes and language-rich experiences whilst learning the foundations of reading through our phonics programme.

In mathematics, children develop secure number sense through practical experiences, exploration, games and mathematical discussion. We focus on helping children understand number deeply rather than simply learning procedures.

Characteristics of Effective Learning

At the heart of our curriculum are the Characteristics of Effective Learning:

  • Playing and Exploring
  • Active Learning
  • Creating and Thinking Critically

These dispositions support children to become curious, resilient and motivated learners who are willing to take risks, learn from mistakes and persevere when things become challenging.

Working in Partnership

We work closely with families and preschool settings to ensure a positive and successful transition into school. Opportunities include:

  • Preschool visits
  • Transition sessions
  • Induction meetings
  • School tours
  • Meet the Teacher sessions
  • Parent workshops
  • Tapestry learning journals

We believe that strong partnerships between home and school help children flourish.

Please contact the school to arrange a visit. We look forward to welcoming you and your family to Bacton Primary School.
